Can you really afford a pet?

Pet owners love their animals; they bring love and fun into the household and can teach children about responsibility. But few realise the potential cost of regular feeding, toys, and vet bills that come with owning a pet. This is why many loving owners are forced to give up their animals every year to rehoming shelters.

This should not put you off owning a pet – far from it – but it is important to think carefully about whether you able to look after it financially like you would any other member of the family.

Research suggests that owning a dog or a cat for its lifetime – 13 or so years – can cost in excess of £18,000, and inflation is likely to push this higher. While paying for food is the biggest day-to-day cost, vets bills are usually the biggest financial headache, so pet insurance is a great money saver.

But don’t try and cut costs by going for the cheapest policy – this could end up being a false economy in the long-run. By paying a bit more each month to a reputable provider such as Pets at Home means you get cover for a wide range of services, including dental care, complementary therapy and overseas treatments.
