What do you want from a car? In an ideal world, you might plump for one of James Bond’s many vehicles, complete with all the Q-branch gadgets you could ever want. But in reality, in the current climate you’re probably looking for something which is cheap to buy and run, without feeling cheap to drive.

Petrol prices have continually pushed to new record levels in the last few years, making the cost of running a car more expensive than ever. So while you might want a powerful, fun-to-drove car, one with good economy will be less demanding on your pocket.

This guide from MSN has some great examples of enjoyable yet economical cars including the current European Car of the Year, the Vauxhall Ampera. Popular hybrid the Toyota Prius is also involved, but it’s not all alternative fuelled cars; the Kia Rio and the Smart Fortwo are also recommended.

It is also worth noting however, that you can save a great deal of fuel by changing the way you drive, as well as what you drive. Simply put, the harder your engine has to work, the more fuel you will use. Accelerating more smoothly and changing gear earlier to keep revs down will therefore save you money at the pumps. The AA has more advice on economical driving.
