Dog feeding help: three top tips

When you get a dog, there are all kinds of things to consider. Whether you’re finalising an insurance deal at or simply investing in a few essentials like a bed, toys and a collar, it’s important to ensure you get its diet right.

When you collect a new puppy or a more fully-grown dog from a reputable home or shelter, you will often be given a diet sheet to ascertain what they have been fed, and for good reason – your pet ought to be kept on the same regime that it has been used to, as this will stop any fussiness or stomach updates. Given it is already in a new environment, further changes should be limited in number.

If you plan to change a dog’s diet, do it over a week or even a month. Mix newer foods into the bowl with what your dog is already used to. Increasing the amount you add in small amounts will mean you can have fewer grumbles or a miserable, hungry dog on your hands.

Finally, the myths surrounding dogs loving bones are not exactly true – they can cause constipation, as well as obstructions in the digestive tract and even life-threatening perforations that could require surgery. After all, bones can splinter into shards. Luckily, there are plenty of chew toy alternatives that can strengthen teeth and give your dog all the calcium it needs.
