Don’t Get The Professionals In: DIY

Spring is a popular time for homeowners to arrange repairs on their property and make some home improvements, but given the general air of austerity in the UK at the moment, many are turning to the simple tricks of DIY to get these jobs done.

In a recent B&Q survey, 53 per cent of Brits said they are scared of DIY, while two out of five said they actively hate it. If you reflect these statistics and instead prefer to get the professionals in, you might want to take a step back and consider the savings you could make in these times of hardship

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors estimates that the typical cost of a professional repaint of a medium-sized room, in an average-sized house, would be £1,050 including costs. Bearing this in mind, getting your hands dirty and doing the job yourself could save you a great deal of money.

If you find yourself converted to the exciting world of DIY, you will need to be aware of any restrictions that might be applicable to you if you are undertaking bigger jobs. For example, building a conservatory or garage may require planning permission and building-regulation approval, while installing double glazing or replacement doors will require approval from your local authority when the work has been completed.

Make sure that you put sufficient time and effort into researching the best ways to carry out any work you do on your property, and be aware of any restrictions before you go ahead with it to prevent the risk of you losing out on valuable time and money.
