Don’t let hearing problems hold you back

Hearing loss affects more people than you might think – charity group Action on Hearing Loss suggests that over ten million people in the UK suffer from some kind of hearing loss – representing around one in six of the population.

This is because hearing loss is most frequently degenerative, meaning it can be a slow process that is not easily noticed. With any type of hearing loss, you need to consider the immediate impact – such as having to turn the television up louder or asking people to repeat themselves – but also the extended impacts. Having hampered communication can lead to people becoming isolated, while in the workplace they may be less involved in meetings, and fail to correctly grasp new things as they are explained. This could mean your career fails to progress in the way you might have liked.

The NHS has a useful guide with some questions that can help identify hearing loss, but it is also wise to get professional advice on a regular basis – especially once you pass 50. Hearing specialists such as Amplifon can provide free hearing tests and consultations to discuss you options – so there is no reason at all to delay!
