Downsizing your car? Don’t get let down by your tyres

For drivers feeling the pinch of hefty insurance premiums and the high cost of fuel, downsizing is a good option. Do you really need as much car as you have? If the answer is now, it might be wise to save money by getting something smaller.

Essentially, less powerful cars that also weigh less do not use as much fuel, and are considered less likely to be involved in a high-speed accident and are thus cheaper to insure. There is also no need to buy new – there are some great deals on used cars with specialist online sellers such as Evans Halshaw, which combined with the sale of your larger car, can make the cost of downsizing minimal.

However, a full check of the car is required before parting with any money, and one area that needs immediate attention is the tyres. Tyres which are worn and cracked are at risk of failure when out on the roads – which could cause an accident that wipes out your insurance premiums savings – but the message does not seem to be getting through to everyone. In addition, cracked tyres which do not retain pressure create drag, resulting in more fuel being used and wiping out savings here too.

Charity group TyreSafe recommends regular routine inspection of tyres – especially before heading out on any summer break.
