Economical cars saving money at the pumps

As every motorist is well aware, the price of petrol has skyrocketed in the last few years, with chancellor George Osborne putting another three pence on fuel duty from August. While the prices may be much the same wherever you fill up, you can offset this cost simply by using less fuel.

Of course, making fewer trips is the easiest way to do this – stretch those legs! But some journeys simply have to be done, in which case you might want to think about trading in your existing car for something a little more economical. Car manufacturers have made great strides in the last few years in improving the fuel economy of their vehicles, and while a new hybrid or electric can be expensive, there are plenty of older petrol vehicles that will reduce your fuel spending.

For reliable used vehicles, the Ford Fiesta is a good place to start. Fleet News magazine recently named the Fiesta its Best Small Car, with the judges recognising its “excellent running costs” combined with driver appeal. Furthermore, Fleet News pointed out that the Fiesta has strong residual values, meaning that you get a good return on your money when you trade in again further down the line.

However, if you want to go all-out and get a new ultra-low emission city vehicle, look no further than the Volkswagen up!, the What Car? Car of the Year for 2012.
