Mintel: younger generations most optimistic about finances

Brits between the ages of 16 to 24 take a more positive attitude towards their finances than their older counterparts, according to a new research. In their flagship report British lifestyles 2011, Mintel found that of the demographic – including both students and non-students – 74 per said their finances were healthy; however, consumer confidence remains low.

There is now a number of accounts designed to help students manage their finances on the market, such as those available at http://www.securetrustbank.com/current-account/welcome-to-our-account, which are a great place to start. However, there is no better way to keep abreast of your income and outgoings than through simple yet effective budgeting.

Of course, it is also important to bear in mind that most universities now offer a range of grants, bursaries and – though competitive – scholarships to support individuals who may be struggling financially during their years at university.

Alexandra Richmond, senior consumer analyst at Mintel said of the figures: “A lack of money holds people back from realising their dreams and as a result, the unemployed and those living in lower-income households are the most likely to say that they always want more than they have. They are less satisfied with life and less likely to agree that they have achieved the things they wanted to.”
