More drivers lose licenses over eyesight

The number of drivers who have had their licenses revoke due to failing eyesight has more than doubled in the last four years, a study by the Co-Operative Motor Group has revealed, suggesting that more people than ever could benefit from laser eye treatment at http://www.ultralase.com. Some 4,009 licenses were revoked as a result of poor vision in 2010, significantly higher than the 1,597 that were taken away in 2006.

Glaucoma was the most common reason for failing eyesight in relation to driving, followed by retinopathy, or damage to the retina. Visual field defects and cataracts were also common causes for lost licenses.

The law requires anybody with concerns over their eyesight to visit a doctor or eye specialist, as well as contacting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency if they are advised to do so. As well as risking a fine of up to £1,000, drivers with poor eyesight could also invalidate their insurance if they fail to follow these guidelines.

“Good eyesight is essential to safe motoring, and we would urge anybody who has concerns over their vision to contact a specialist,” said Tony Guest, managing director of the Co-Operative Motor Group.

“There is no room for complacency when it comes to road safety.”
