Taking care of your pet in the winter

Many pets enjoy the snow, but some are not as well prepared for the colder weather as their big, thick coats would have you believe. If you own a cat or dog which enjoys the outdoors, rising vet and insurance costs mean that preparing your pet for the winter also makes good financial sense.

As this article notes, certain types of cat or dog are less suited to the cold; older dogs, or those which have recently been ill should avoid prolonged spells outside, as should smaller dogs or those with a short-hair coat. Larger breeds are better equipped, but remember that young puppies still need protecting. It is recommended that only large dogs and cats in their prime should be allowed to roam freely outside for any significant period of time. If you need to keep your dog outdoors, then you should invest in a good kennel, available from the likes of Pets at Home.

There are also other things to consider during the winter weather – particularly the salt used on footpaths and the antifreeze you may be using at this time of year. These can be toxic to pets and lead to a serious illness requiring expensive vet treatment, so care should be taken not to expose animals to these. If a dog does get covered in road salt, it should be brushed down promptly.
