Understanding the cost of pet ownership

Many UK families enjoy the companionship and joy that a family pet brings into the home, and they are great for helping to teach children about responsibility and caring for others. However, choosing the right pet is important.

Dogs and cats are by far the most popular household pets, but these animals do take a lot of looking after. Dogs in particular need to be regularly walked and entertained, or the pent-up energy can manifest itself in behavioural problems which can be difficult to train away. In addition, healthy dog and cat food can be costly, especially as the animal grows and it begins to develop a stronger appetite.

Anyone considering owning a dog needs to think carefully about the actual cost; those struggling with their monthly bills should perhaps think twice about whether they can afford the extra outgoings. A recent survey from PDSA shows that a third of young people who consider giving up their pet if the costs became too much, indicating a lack of awareness over how much these animals cost.

As well as the cost of feeding and the time taken to engage with the pet, owners need to factor in paying for pet insurance. It may be tempting to go without, but the cost of vet bills for treating a sick pet can be very high indeed, and may be payable at any time. Without that cover, owning a pet may be very costly.
